New Delhi, India: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi changed the Delhi Police Commissioner to facilitate the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ahead of his proposed march to Parliament on July 20.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) appointed senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar as the new Delhi Police Commissioner, replacing Satish Golcha on Friday. Speaking in a self-recorded video message, Sanjay Singh alleged that 59-year-old Sonam Wangchuk had been on a 21-day hunger strike while raising the voice of millions of youths affected by alleged paper leaks.

"59-year-old Sonam Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike for the last 21 days. He is putting his life on the line and raising the voice of millions of young people in the country. The voice of those youth who were ruined by the 93 paper leaks, who were helpless, and had no one to raise their voice," he said.

The Prime Minister knew that this voice would become very loud. Therefore, he changed the Delhi Police Commissioner and appointed a police commissioner who could arrest Sonam Wangchuk. He was forcibly removed from Jantar Mantar and admitted to the hospital... He had called upon the youth, MPs and MLAs to gather at Jantar Mantar on the 20th and march towards Parliament," Singh added.

The AAP leader further alleged that Wangchuk had been ignored by the government despite remaining on a hunger strike for 21 days.

"The Prime Minister of India has not talked to him for 21 days. He doesn't even think it's necessary to tweet an appeal to end the hunger strike. No government representative comes to talk to him," Singh said. He also claimed that Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke had been detained and alleged that the government was using force to suppress protests.

"I appeal to the youth of the country to support Sonam Wangchuk and not let this movement weaken," Singh added. His remarks came after Wangchuk was taken to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning. The climate activist is conscious, his vital parameters are stable, and he has been admitted to the emergency ward under medical supervision.

Furthermore, reacting to the developments, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Dr Ashutosh Verma alleged that no representative of the government had reached out to Wangchuk despite his prolonged fast. "I think it's unfortunate that the government and no responsible person from the government side has come for him till now, and today his condition has worsened. On the 20th, he was going to hold a big rally; removing him from there is a sign of a scared government," Verma said.

"In this country, if the voice of the youth and the public is not heard, then whose voice is being heard? This can be understood. The arrogant government of the Bharatiya Janata Party has now surrendered before Sonam Wangchuk," he added.

The police action drew sharp criticism from several Opposition leaders. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that the government was suppressing peaceful protests, while Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghose and Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav also condemned the action. According to sources, Wangchuk is conscious, his vital parameters are stable, and he has been admitted to the emergency ward of Safdarjung Hospital under medical supervision.

Delhi Police said Wangchuk was shifted to the hospital in compliance with the Delhi High Court's directions and on medical advice due to his deteriorating health. Police said protesters attempted to obstruct the exercise, resulting in a slight commotion, but maintained that maximum restraint was exercised. DCP New Delhi Sachin Sharma later said Wangchuk had been shifted to an appropriate government hospital for medical intervention and was under medical supervision.

Abhijeet Dipke, CJP founder, alleged that police forcibly took Wangchuk away and claimed he was assaulted while trying to reach the protest site. CJP Chief Spokesperson Saurav Das also alleged that Dipke had been stopped by Delhi Police and claimed students at the protest site were lathi-charged. There was no immediate official response to these allegations. CJP activists also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"If they think that taking Sonam Sir away will end this movement, they are mistaken. We will remain here and will march to Parliament on July 20."Until now, we were demanding Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation, but after this despicable act, we will now demand the resignation of Narendra Modi," Abhijeet Dipke, CJP founder, said.

Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged nationwide examination irregularities, including the NEET paper leak controversy. On Thursday, the Delhi High Court directed that his medical condition be monitored daily and that any required medical intervention be provided.
